Cubify Capture converts 2D images into a 3D model using a process called photogrammetry. By analysing multiple images of the same object from different angles, Cubify Capture is able to digitally reconstruct your object in 3D and produce a 3D model you can view, edit, and even 3D print.
Here’s how the process works: After uploading your photos or video, Cubify Capture analyzes every image (or frame of video) to identify unique features in each one. The features in one image are compared to the features in every other image (and so on, until all features have been compared to each other). When a feature is matched in three images, that match is saved. Our software then uses those matched features plus information about your camera to determine where each camera was in relation to the object. With this data, we are able to generate a 3D cloud of points (those matched features) of the object you captured. Those points are then “wrapped” with a surface (commonly called a “mesh”). Finally parts of the original image are mapped back onto the mesh as texture. This model is then delivered to your browser for you to view and edit. When you're done editing, you can download the digital files. We provide you an STL file (the mesh generated in #4 above) and an OBJ + Texture file (the full color model generated in #5 above) for you to use in your favorite 3D modeling applications.
